Defining a Vision What defines your vision? What is a vision and how can you move forward with your pursuit of it? Just as we are faced with obstacles we must learn to overcome, we are also tasked with defining a vision for ourselves and channeling that vision into how we build our personal and professional lives: around the heart where it lives. Before you can begin to answer a question about your vision, start with this simple thought: Do you have one? The Critical Importance of Self-Reflection Once you begin to think about what you value and want to accomplish with the very limited time you have here on this earth, it would be in your best interest to really probe yourself on why you feel the way you feel and what tangible effort you can make to take you to where you want to be. Think of it as if youre at a bus stop. You want to make sure you take the right bus, because only that bus will take you to where you want to go; it serves well to remind oneself that in order to reach a destination, the correct steps must be made along the wayâ€"a targeted approach. Be directed but prepared for detours if they come up without warning, something that is to be expected. The question starts becoming more of an exercise in self-reflection, something that will serve you well in university as well as in life outside of your academic or athletic pursuits. When you begin to adopt a mindset of self-reflection, constantly evaluating what you can do to improve and take you closer to your vis ion, you will begin to grow wiseâ€"provided that you learn from mistakes and act upon your newfound knowledge. A definition of insanity is making the same decisions and expecting different results. It seems fitting that a definition of wisdom is learning from past decisions. Learning from Failure Improving Upon Success Glancing at my life in the rearview mirror enables me to see my failures and successes and how they have enabled me to make great improvements in how I live my life and come closer to my vision. Notice how I detailed failures before successes. Only by reflecting on what you did good and not so good will you be able to improve yourself and your overall performance. Take any accomplished individual within any realm of effort as an example. Bodybuilders and powerlifters alike dedicate their time to constantly improving how they reach a diet higher in nutritional value. Physicians undergo rigorous training in order to hone their skills in a high-stress setting, consistently having to reevaluate their study strategies and people-skills so that they can become better practitioners. University students look back at their performance and begin to think about how they can improve their study habits and fit in the gym with extracurriculars and research activities. None of this is possible were it not for self-reflection and a success-oriented mindset. A Success-Oriented Mindset Making a Vision a Reality Life is about improvement, and with this attitude of self-reflection we become empowered to further our personal development to a level that enables us to make our vision a reality. The catch lies in whether or not we are truly honest with ourselves. If you were to picture yourself 10 years from now, what would you want to have accomplished? The truth is that life is not linear, but having patience and doing your best with whatever challenges you face will ultimately guide you to a more fruitful future in university and beyond. When youve reflected, learned, and decided on what you want to dedicate yourself to you must begin to act in a very careful way. Too many students in university stretch themselves too thin and feel overwhelmed. Its alright to try and do multiple things, so long as you are making progress in your development and doing so without compromising your integrity, but I would caution you against taking on too many activities and classes at the start of your academic c areer. Burning out is not how you paint your vision into existence. It takes slow, targeted, refined strokes. Youre the painter. Your vision is your masterpiece. Begin by working to identify what you must learn in order to accomplish a task, a small portion of your ultimate vision. Once you feel that youre ready to test it out go out into the world and do it. Continue the process of reflecting and learning at every step. You wont ever attain all the knowledge there is in this world, for knowledge is akin to an ocean that one dips a finger into; what clings is what you know, and the ocean remains ever deep. This doesnt mean that you have no hope of attaining all the tools you need, it just means you must prioritize what tools are most important for you in crafting your vision. Master them and put them to use as you make your masterpiece. A Cautioning Word The one thing that I believe holds most people back is the lack of boldness to go out and try a new idea. As a student here at Illinois, you will be empowered with resources you cant imagine, provided that you take the initiative to use them. Everyone here is dedicated to making you as successful as you want to beâ€"the key lies in that last part. Approach your vision as something abstract, it may not be fully defined yet, but as you learn and grow it will become clearer. You may find yourself disliking the direction you are going in. The realization of this is critical. If you find yourself not enjoying your work, it means that you must seriously reflect upon what your work is taking you towards. Dont be afraid to remold your vision, provided that youve reflected critically and sought advice from people you trust. You will slowly come to find your vision, so long as you continue to persevere with a mindset of dedication and a heart housing a vision worthy of your potential. If we do not define a vision for ourselves, someone will define one for us. May we persevere without fear lest we succumb to our own naivety. John steinbeck Essay John SteinbeckJohn Steinbeck was a famous American author who wrote from the 1920 to the 1940. Steinbeck was constantly moving across the country trying to succeed as a writer. John Steinbeck lived a life of constant up and downs, successes and failures before he landed on his feet and became a famous author. John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California on February 27, 1902. He was the only son and the third child of John Ernst Steinbeck and Olive Hamilton. Steinbeck’s father owned comfortable Victorian house in Salinas. John’s father managed the Sperry Flour Mill. Things were pretty good for the Steinbeck, they were settled in a nice home they did not have to many financial problems, but then economic difficulties forced John’s father dismissal from the mill. Steinbeck’s father deiced to open a feed and grain store and go into business himself. The store struggled to survive and eventually failed completely. A close friend of John’s father got hi m a job as an account for the Spreckles Sugar Company. â€Å"Although he had a job, John’s father was extremely devastated by the lose of his business†(Stephen)â€Å"Encouraged by his parents John began to develop a love literature†(Morrow). At his ninth birthday John received a copy of the book Morte d’Arthur. This was the first book John ever owned. He later said it was a great influence upon his life. During his years at Salinas High School, John excelled in English. At the end of his Freshman year in High School John had determined that he wanted to become a writer. At the end of his Senior year John applied to Stanford University and was accepted as an English major. Coming of his success in high school John felt very confidante that he would succeed. To pay for his education John went to school half a year and worked the other half. John found college boring and felt that he was a â€Å"writer in training†(Ito, 14) not a college student. After six years of struggling to pass John left Stanford in 1925. â€Å"John was far from confidant about his future†(Harmon, 56) so he packed his few belongings and headed to a resort near Lake Tahoe. One of John friends found him a job at Lake Tahoe in June of 1925. His plan was to make enough money to become a freelance writer in New York City.Low on funds John signed on as a working berth on a freighter headed to New York is November of 1925. When he arrived in New York John got a job as a newspaper cub reporter. He finally seemed to a secure job and things seemed alright. After a couple of m onths working as a reported John realized that he did not fit this kind of job. â€Å"Due to his lack of experience John was never given a chance to show his talent and he was given unimportant assignments with no value†(Morrow 75).Numerous times he failed to show up at work and was soon after fired. Barely scraping by John wrote a collection of short stories. He went to two publishing companies and he was shot down by both. One explained that they would not publish an unknown writer, they other refused to publish short stories. Heart-broken and broke John got a job as a waiter on a California bound freighter and headed back to his old job at Lake Tahoe. To just make things a little harder for John when he arrived at his old job, winter was close behind and he got snowed in for eight months. He took advantage of this time and wrote A Cup of Gold, a biography of the pirate Henry Morgan. A publishing company called McBride and Company agreed to publish A Cup of Gold and the book was on shelves in the autumn of 1929. Then in 1930 John married Carol Henning. To add on to John’s good luck streak one of his books The Pastures of Heaven was published in 1932. In 1933 To a God Unknown and two parts of The Red Pony were published. John finally seemed to be on his feet. In 1934 John won the O. Henry prize for his short story â€Å"The Murderer†, but that prize came at a price. John’s mother Olive Steinbeck died from paralysis. After grieving the lose of his mother, John had to continue on and trying and get over this one of many hurdles in his life. Pascal Covici, who worked for McIntosh Otis contracted John to publish To rtilla Flat threw his company. Tortilla Flat was published in 1935 and â€Å"was destined to become John’s first commercial success and literary classic†(Ito, 33). The book was an immediate success for John, but once again there was a dark side to John’s success, his father John Ernest Steinbeck died. â€Å"Steinbeck resolved that he would never abandon the pursuit of his own professional destiny as a writer†(Ito, 35). â€Å"The success of Tortilla Flat had gained him national renown†(Pastori). John had finally gotten the respect and recognition the he deserved. In 1937 Of Mice and Men was published and was chosen by the Book-of-the-Month club. Continuing with John’s success The Grapes of Wraith was published in 1939. This book was and still is considered to be one of the best books written. John gained extreme fame from this novel. â€Å"This novel is still effecting generations today†(Ito, 49)John Steinbeck lived through some tough times of ups and downs. Whenever things seemed to be going right for him, everything turned around. John had to jump many hurdles to finally make his life long dream come true, become a writer. Perspectives of Ageing - Essay Example Racism, on the other hand, is related to class of people who feel discriminated in certain nation and society based on their ethnic origin and skin color or upbringing. Every nation evolves certain policies to support the senior citizens or aging population within their region .They also help support the minority to help them integrate with mainstream population. Thus many theories and policies have been formulated to enhance the life of aging population and to control the negative impacts of racism within community. The report examines the issues of aging and racism, which exists in a small suburban town in India, and the two interviews were conducted with informed consent .To balance the nature of participation one female and one male member was chosen. This gender bias is very apparent and so is class bias reflected from the interviews. The issues elated to racism and ageing can take many forms of social issue which changes its flavor based on the country of origin. The issues are there, and it needs to be addressed in the light of the national policies and theories, and constitutional rights of the citizens. This issue needs to be approached from wider perspective, from local level, national level and international level. The issues are that health and economics needs should be addressed along with the social issues, which are apparent in the aging population. The interviews conducted reveal that the issues of aging and racism are mainly connected to health, economic and social interactivity. These are the issue which impact everyday life events. These are global issues which are prevalent in every country. The increasing life expectancy has led to increasing number of aged population over 60 years of age. This aging population is growing number is impacting the reconsideration on the national level and constitutional level, with new policy implementation, and the need for new set of rights which can guarantee them support and protection in unusual circumstance. The exploding need for new consideration has been the strongly recognized by the health policies, socioeconomic development plans and economic policies which can provide maximum provision to this group with regard to health and functional capacity. This has been done in consideration for the betterment of their social participation and economic security. These are some of the new challenges of the emerging society. Ageing: Since my interview is related to people from developing countries, who are residing in UK , but originally from India, it would be interesting to examine the nature of policy change and social changes which has been witnessed worldwide. The theories which have evolved over time on ageing, plays a key role in understanding my selected audience. In the context of my interview, ageing is more relevant than racism. Therefore I am going to focus more on the theories and policies related to ageing which applies more in the context of my interviews. It is interesting how we can trace the impacts of these theories in real life in two very different cases taken from two gender specimen. An understanding of this phenomenon from scientific and social perspective is important to understand the significant role in the growing number of ageing population throughout the world. Also this can be a good way to attract good workers, that ones nice and good work expectations But in other hand this program has some disadvantages that can be attach to this plan such as the budget that they have to spent, because those programmers could be out of their, or in the other they might have the problem that people would not sing in the courses making the company just waste the money. Mix of knowledge, as all now development is the process to help people to grow and extend their abilities, but people can bring their old baggage so that could create misunderstandings with the others, implementing their old or previous knowledge that might fit or not in the new place. Time, it is a factor that is important to remark, being an essential part of any process , because some companies are not able to wait until the employees learn, understand and get ready, so it will become a fight against time, so does it play a significant role. 5.0 BENEFITS EVALUATE THE BENEFITS FOR TESCO IN PROVIDING A STRUCTURED TRAINING PROGRAMME.TO WHAT EXTEN DO YOU THINK THE TRAINING HAS ACHIEVED A RETURN ON INVESMESNT. Tescos programs have been created with the aim of train and develop their staff, and with it, gives the chance to monitoring and evaluated their process according to their performance. As it can be seen this method bring the opportunity to see how the performance of the employee is, giving to them a better and solid feedback providing more order a better focus aim and also construct a better confident in the employee making them aware of their performance. Also in the way that with this process they can measure and analyze better what they have done in al their activities such as activities plans, personal development plans, and so. More over about this gives the chance to expand their view and have a wide vision in the way that other department can give a feedback, so they can improve and do better performance in the case that they might need. Has interaction between management and employee during their training giving them the possibility to express themselves. The aim of training its t improve knowledge and skills in an individuals changing their attitudes, it is one of the most important potential motivators, with it can lead to so many benefits in training(J. Mullins 489P) such as: Motivate the staff, raising their confident and commitment the more to the company, obtaining from them a better performance. Give them the chance to have a career progression also with the felling of personal achievement, so the training will provide them with the chance to get recognition and also progress and see what they have done. Helping them out also to progress and develop their abilities, skills and knowledge by giving them the right tools. Its morally wrong to give a leadership role without some of training wring from them and those who work with them J.Adair. The path to leadership I do think that all companies do the training with the aim invest in themselves and also in people, as it can be seen that now everything and markets are more competitive they need to make the difference, and how this can be possible? By giving them the opportunities to improve, be better, teach them, and after all evaluate them and use what they have learned, making all the process go trough. So I do think that afterwards the training process is when the company will see the results for all what they have done for their staff that later on will give back with their job and productivity. 6.0 CONCLUSION to summarized this report it can be seen that tesco and any other company needs to have the right training being that is an important lever to bring improvement, changes to the company and staff. If one cannot learn from one’s own mistakes, it is necessary then to learn from the mistakes of others. When dealing with the political sciences, especially in international history, it is possible to analyze what has succeeded, and what has failed. The United States, being a fairly young country, has the advantage of a relatively short past, unmarked by national chaos as a result of poor governing. The United States, by learning from past history of other nations, chose a system of stability and balance, called democracy, which has caused the United States to flourish over time. Democracy has successfully reined in this country for all of its 200-year history. Democracy, for our nation, has proved to be a keystone in every aspect of our success, our growth, and our strength as a country. It is crucial however, that we learn from the past, to realize that things can and do change. In the 1930s Germany, struck by inflation, a collapse in the economy, and national outrage, declined from a democratic republic, to a totalitarian state. The fall of the Weimar republic, and the rise of the NSDAP, which eventually led to WWII, shows how the drastic effects of economic problems, extreme nationalism, and drastic changes in cultural identity, can lead to a totalitarian state, and a complete political turnover within a nation. It is important to learn from the Weimar experience in order to help maintain the health, stability, and power of our own democracy today in the United States. At the turn of the 20th century, Germany experienced an industrial revolution that caused them to almost capitalize in trade and production as a country. By August of 1914 WWI had began and Germany, both economically, and socially was hit hard. By the closing months of 1918, Germany, once strong and peeking in industry and economy finances, returned from the war battered and beaten. They were completely finished off by the 1919 Treaty of Versailles. The treaty outright blamed the war on Germany, and charged them with the damage fines of the entire war. Such a huge amount of money would surely strike down and weaken an already tattered Germany, which was precisely the intention at hand. Germany was faced with paying for all damages caused by the war.

The value of friendship

True friendship is one of the most important asset that human has and true friendship surpass any obstacle and test of times. We are born as social beings and no human can live alone like an island.Although this is taken literally most of the times, no one understands the value of those around you not until you are left alone one day in a situation you need help. Grieve (2008) assert that in every aspect of our life, we interact with people in different ways. It is through interaction with people that we are socialized to the society. However it is not everyone in our life that we get along with.There are individuals who we become close confidants to, who we can term as true friends.   Although it is usual to make and lose friends, there are friends who have a great impact in our life and whose memory lives to our old age. These are who we call true friends.   True friends are hard to come by and when we lose them, we do feel that a part of us has been taken away.A true friend is one who is ready to sincerely do anything for you in value of your friendship. However most of the times we take our friendship for granted and we may not be committed to like our friends are. According to Donegani et al., (2006) despite this, true friendship will survive all odds and the bond between the two friends survives beyond the reason for the end of their friendship.True friends are bonded by a strong bond in a way that although they may be separated psychically, their hearts longs for the other and what remains in their friendship is the melancholic memories of the times they shared together.A wise saying says no one knows the value of water until the well dries and this can be applied to our friends. We never know the value of our friends not until we are separated. As we said, most of the time will be taking our friendship casually not realizing their value in our life.However when we are separated, we start seeing difference in our life. Lonely moments starts crawling in our life and we spend long days thinking about the good times we had before. Although we may try our foot in making other friends, we never fell satisfied. We still miss the days we spend with our friends. It is true to assert that true friendship surpass any obstacle and test of timesDuring my high school days, I learnt the value of friendship in the hard way. I was sad and lonely girl in my childhood as I grew at home as the only child. My parents were both full time workers and I spent most of my time in the house alone.My life brightened when I went to school as I interacted with other children and made friends. Among the friends I made in my junior school, Jane could be considered as a true friend. Our friendship blossomed as we were in the same class and lived in the same neighborhood. We spent our time together, played together, ate together, and bonded the same bus to school; our friendship was the center of our life.We were close confidant with one another and we shared our innermost feeling. Furthermore we were faced by the same condition at home since Jane was still the only child in the family and her parents were full time worker.When we were not in school, we spent our time together either in our home or in their home. I cherished each and every moment I spent with Jane. I felt a different person in her company, my eyes brimmed with happiness and my heart was filled with joy like child curdled by her mother. I felt like Jane was my sister and I real took her like my sister.On our birthday, we showered each other with gifts and up to date, I still have the old doll that she bought me on my eight birthdays. However, fate had it that our friendship would not grow beyond out middle classes. When we went to high school, things changed rapidly which left me a lonely person in life.I have come to believe that very precious things which you value most in you life are the one which you are most likely to lose and in a more painful way. I did not think that our friendship with Jane be broken by any third party.However this came to in our first year in high school. Our parents had decided to take us to the same high school since they realized the value of our friendship and they encouraged us to be there for each other.  Ã‚   One day, Jane came running to be in a very upbeat mood.   I could see that she was very excited and she told me that something very wonderful had happened in her life.I was very happy to see my friend that much excited but little did I know that the unfolding news would change our friendship and affect me in a great way. Jane informed that she had fallen in love with Kelvin, who was a new boy just admitted to the school. She informed me that Kelvin had approached her and she cold not resist since she had strong feeling towards him.I advised her about the difficulties she may face dealing with her boyfriend and committing her time to education but she assured me that she would manage it. Upon pondering the news, I told her that this was her decision but I cautioned her to be very careful. She promised me that she would be extra careful and would not relent on her educational goal of becoming a doctor. However, I had one concern about our friendship.I felt that Jane would spend most of her time with her new boyfriend. With a thoughtful expression, I asked Jane: â€Å"Is your new friendship going to a break up our close friendship?†Ã‚   Jane looked at me and replied straight to my face â€Å"Don’t by like that, of course you know that I love you more that anything. You are my best friend and nothing can separate us.Don’t you believe me?† for something thins were as usual but with time I noted that Jane was avoiding my companionship and she was spending more time with her boyfriend.   I started feeling sadder and lonely. My childhood days crawled back in my life.   When I thought about the words Jane had uttered straight to my face, I felt she was a liar a nd she did not value me at all.   With time, our friendship died away and I felt sadder.One day, Jane borrowed my book and she lost it. I could not control my anger and I hurled words at there calling her a liar and untrustworthy friend. She reiterated and hit me hard with her lunch box. Our friendship was as dead as a dodo.Only melancholic memories of our past that remained, hunting me on daily bases. This was just the begging and more lonely days came when were separated after high school.   However, true friendship does not end and although you may be separated physically, you are together at heart.

To find the right balance between critical thinking and creative problem solving, one must understand the similarities and differences between the two. This paper will attempt to show those ideas. However, I find that they are very much alike. Critical thinking and creative problem solving follow very similar steps to reach a solution. Conceptualizing and preparing are the beginning phases at which time one realizes there is a problem. Stage two is the applying and analyzing or incubation stage. After success has been reached at this stage, the process proceeds to the synthesizing or illumination stage. This could also be considered the Aha stage where an idea comes to light. The last stage is the evaluation or verification to determine the success of the solution. One difference that should be discussed is that the creative process appears to be more open and looks for more than one resolution to a problem. An example of this is the story at the end of chapter nine. The question presented was â€Å"Show how it is possible to determine the height of a tall building with the aid of barometer† (Dacey amp; Lennon, 1998, p. 185). The professor expected an answer using physics logic, but the student was creative and thought outside the box. By doing this, there were many answers to the question.
